I used to do it this way:
Every night before going to bed I would reverse some of the top movers (that were not moving from news from that day) and did get some profit. The ones moving from news coming in the afternoon or at night tend to move at least a couple of days before reversal. Either way I was getting frustrated that way, my port was still smallish, so (as you say) I had to set limits on what I put on this kind of trading. So when I woke up my winnings were almost gone, after resetting my positions on the morning (or selling what already made its daily profit) I had almost nothing to show for the effort I put in.
What I'm trying to say is that I agree reset is playable even if you're not around, but that takes even more risk, and most of the time you will be investing more time without necessarily securing more profit.
So I started trying to secure a way to be profitable without spending 18 hours online. And I still haven't figured out how to play moviestocks long term (I guess I can't see how successful a movie will be, I don't yet have the knowledge on the industry to figure this out). Soooo, I'm stuck with playing mostly starbonds, secure investments that require just a few minutes a week to track. Besides that I do daily news if I catch them on time. I just have a handful of long term moviestocks (ones I can actually tell will be done and will be highly profitable), and of course playing openers and the derivatives. I hate IPOs (time constraints), so I usually drop them too early to be sure. And with all that I'm stuck at making very little profits lately (the say summer's gone!).
I'm still doing pretty good (top 5 on both the PVL leagues I'm elegible for this month), but in no way near the ones doing reset. In previous months I was able to battle them out (won 2 PVL leagues last month). So it's frustrating. I'm left with trying to figure out ways to be more competitive investing less time, or going into darkness and just playing out for myself, taking 10 years to reach 1 bil... :)
Ok so you see that I talk about myself too much too... Good luck with your playing strategy, I'll continue to keep an eye on it, always trying to learn something new. And thanks for taking the time to write about it!
