Before the recent changes, I played that way...holding long or short and waiting. Mostly holding long. And it didn't really work for me.
The value of my port was stagnant except for the times when a movie would adjust big. Otherwise, I found that I was bleeding red because I'd buy something that had some news and forget about it, assuming that it would eventually get made and go up.
It wasn't until the shakeup that I reevaluated the way the market (and the humans playing the market) works, and I'm proud to say (and to be honest, a little bewildered) that I haven't finished a day in the red since at least January if not December. On Dec 31st, my port was just above 1.5 billion. Today it is just over 1.9 billion.
Maybe I was just a bad player the previous 10 years (and sporadic, as my pattern seemed to be to check how the port was for a few days, buy some "new" stocks, and then not log in for half a year), and maybe I'm not a good player now, simply "gaming" the system. Maybe what I wrote above isn't true or fair and I'm doing so well because of some luck I can't fathom. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, but I'm still in the green every day by 3-5 million.
I hope this doesn't sound pompous or condescending. I truly am giddy and bewildered whenever I log in and see how well I'm doing. And my posts were simply me trying to analyze what I think are the reasons why, so that those who aren't doing so well might be able to read my ideas and incorporate them into their trading.
Oh, and as I said to others in the "500 million club" league, it certainly helps to be sick for a week so that you can analyze the way the market moves over the course of a day (and there are general patterns to it). :)
