Having problems as you are, bonds are the first thing you should be into, to turn things around.
Once you have them set up, it's an engine that keeps pumping money into your port. Read HSX Dude every week, to get the adjusting bonds set. Check the-numbers.com HSX page, for expected daily ROI on future adjusts (and/or use Port Monkey or Chimp to neatly access the-numbers data), or, email KaiGee for access to his new, in-testing, bond site, for the sortable bond table (see this post, for address).
While it's true you can occasionally get stung by an unexpected attachment of a star to a movie, there's a lot of money to be made by getting most bonds right, most of the time... and there are tools to help do that.
