it seems as a general rule kids/family films seem difficult to track accurately, people indicate an interest but don't necessarily stick to their word re.seeing it opening weekend....Sherlock Holmes seems more the type of film where people will be desperate to see it early in its run.
They don't target exactly the same audience but I would say there is an element of cross over between SH and Avatar and therefore it's possible Avatar may continue to dominate that audience segment if word of mouth is as good as the reveiws have been, and it starts to suck people in for repeat viewings.
All that said, I imagine Christmas Day opening weekend adds another level of difficulty to accurate tracking.
