I have big beefs with Broken Embraces.

Posted by: Toruk Facto (a.k.a Facto) on Jan 04, 17:13 in response to second gary's post "Broken Embraces," "Up in the air,"...

First off, who exactly were we to sympathize with? The movie was almost misanthropic. The gay director Almodovar seems to believe women are as base and nymphomaniac as people in gay bars. Perhaps some truly are, but why make movies about them? Do some love this movie because it's exotic, or do they see some true brilliance and insights there that neither I nor most of for instance British media did not see?

(Check RT, British reviewers seem to be less than 50% on it, not impressed, for the most part. I feel quite confident that there's nothing I missed, it's all about the "differentness" of Almodovar's personae/character gallery, and how lewd they are. Shock-factor, kind of. Debauchery and "European" morals. No, it's just dreck, and very subpar for him. I loved "Talk To Her" and "All About My Mother", though. Have Volver on DVD, but not seen it yet. At festivals this year, all but the most clueless were talking about how subpar Broken Embraces were. Don't get me wrong, I already said that to the person next to me, during end credits, before hearing anyone else's opinions. I'm not swayed like that. It's just surprising to me to see how American film enthusiasts seem to lap it up a lot more than Europeans, which leads me to think that Americans believe there's something European exotic about the film and its story. There is not. It's just off.)

Up in the Air wasn't quite there, either. It was decent, but if it's clearly one of the year's top three films, then that says a lot about the film year that was.. I'll see that one again, though, at some point. But Reitman still has some way to go. And Almodovar has been there, but lost focus.
