I still have to beg to differ.

From what I recall, all the women in the film were promiscuous and shallow/superficial.

Penelope's character could've just found a regular job. That's fully possible today, for all women. Instead, she remains the trophy mistress of a man she despises - even though he'd do anything for her. (Like shelling out however much was needed, in order to try and save her mortally ill father.)

I just read through the first page of users' comments on Imdb for Broken Embraces, btw, and noticed how many make the same comment I made: All the charecters in the film are shallow, none feel worth caring for. I recommend browsing the first page or two there, and check the reviews that are less than nine stars. They were all very well written. Not usual for Imdb, but it's an Almodovar film, so most viewers are more or less intellectual in the first place, probably..
