I rewatched it last year and felt the opposite. Despite the flaws it's the only decent one of the new trilogy
I agree with the criticisms about its structure - splitting the main cast into 3 storylines feels too much, particularly when their re-connection is so contrived. Floating Leia is also pretty awful.
But everything done with Luke was incredible and some of the best things I've seen int he franchise since Return of the Jedi. To humanise him, to give him flaws, was incredible. It's amusing to watch the fanboys explode at the idea of giving their hero flaws. That's the point, and he redeems himself in such a beautiful way. In fact, a film about flaws is pretty intriguing as a blockbuster.
It's also visually the best SW film since Empire. Beautiful shots and sequences, inspired by Kurosawa.
I'd take all this over TFA which has Kasdan yet managed to be a pale imitation of A Hew Hope, and just felt tired and pointless. And don't get me started on Rise, a film that is so poorly told and such nonsense that it makes TLJ look like a masterpiece.
Watched STAR8 last night on TNT for first time since seeing it in the theater Dec 30, 11:58
