That's not exactly accurate. You're confusing what "Top two box" means (more info inside)

The "top two box" scores that you sometimes hear about are ratings, not recommendations.  People are asked to rate the movie on a 5-point scale (Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor).  The "top two box" score is the combination of the Ex/VG scores--so that's what the "in the 80s" for Creed III refers to.

Separately, people are asked if they'd recommend the movie to friends/family/others.  The scale is generally Yes, Definitely/Yes, Probably/No, Probably Not/No, Definitely Not.  Typically, only the "Yes, Definitely" recommendation scores are reported to the studio/filmmakers.

Roughly speaking, the "Definitely" recommend scores are usually all of the "Excellent" ratings, plus half of the "Very Goods."  It can vary from time to time depending on subject matter or genre of movie, but that's a general rule.  What does that mean, practically speaking?  It means that two movies that have similar "Top two box" scores can have different "Definitely" recommend scores, depending on the ratio of Ex to VG scores.   So Movies A & B both score 85% "Top two boxes," but Movie A is 50% Ex, 35% VG, while Movie B is 35% Ex, 50% VG.  You'd expect the "Definitely" recommend for Movie A to be around 67%, while for Movie B, you'd expect it to be around 60%.

Also, most screening surveys these days are done digitally (though the largest screening company is still split between doing them on cards and digital devices), so they ask a lot more than a dozen questions.

BSL AMA: CREED 3 is scoring in the high 80's (for test screenings), much better than THE FLASH notfabio Oct 18, 09:43

BSL AMA: Barring a last minute reshoot/change the Mister Mind tease in SHAZAM is not followed up on in SHAZAM: FURY OF THE GODS. notfabio Oct 18, 09:46

What does that mean "scoring in the high 80s"? What was the "score" for the Flash? What is the source? ELI5 {nm} execrated Oct 18, 09:54

Studio test screenings score on a 1-100 across various demos on various things but the goal is to get a high "definite recommend" percentage notfabio Oct 18, 10:04

The specific scores on THE FLASH, etc I think were posted at one point, I think it was low 80's after the most recent? notfabio Oct 18, 10:06

I thought maybe "80s" referred to a dollar amount, like 80m opening. Where can one find these screening scores you refer to? {nm} execrated Oct 18, 10:10

They are typically confidential, occasionally they leak, like they did in all the Batgirl coverage or if a studio wants to brag. {nm} notfabio Oct 18, 10:15

And anything that scores in the 80's or above is considered some level of good. Its then a deeper dive into the other responses Moviesnob Oct 18, 12:10

Correct. {nm} RupertPupkin Oct 18, 12:16

13LIV received the best test scores in MGM history, and was dumped to streaming. Antibody Oct 18, 10:08

The stars don't show up it in until 15 minutes in (after a lot of Thai) and it's a lot of tight murky cave footage. Not really commercial. notfabio Oct 18, 10:14

How did it scored so high? {nm} Antibody Oct 18, 10:20

Probably the "feel good" ending (and they eat up "based on a true story" like candy) also probably smaller test audiences due to COVID. {nm} notfabio Oct 18, 10:28

Horror movies/sci fi gets ripped apart because they usually have downer endings (also why CinemaScores are usually bad for them) {nm} notfabio Oct 18, 10:29

Could have been harder to recruit and/or had to give a large incentive to those who did show up, plus... RupertPupkin Oct 18, 12:07
