"Holland is a name in common usage given to a region in the western part of the Netherlands."

Posted by: Facto on Jul 09, 12:01 in response to Facto's post Hah, you just say that 'cause your from the Holland-part...

"Moreover, the term Holland is frequently used to refer to the whole of the Netherlands. This usage is unofficial and while generally accepted, it has caused a number of people from the Netherlands to complain."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland

"The proper name of the area in both Dutch and English is "Holland". "Holland" is a part of the Netherlands. "Holland" is informally used in English and other languages, including sometimes the Dutch language itself, to mean the whole of the modern country of the Netherlands [4] (this example of pars pro toto or synecdoche is similar to the tendency to refer to the United Kingdom as "England").

The people of Holland are referred to as "Hollanders" in both Dutch and English. Today this refers specifically to people from the current provinces of North Holland and South Holland. Strictly speaking, the term "Hollanders" does not refer to people from the other provinces in the Netherlands, but colloquially "Hollanders" is sometimes mistakenly used in this wider sense."

Who will win the weekend? bloopster Jul 09, 11:15

Holland!!!!! Oh, sorry... wrong board. (It won't be Eclipse though... that's for sure.) {nm} secretstalker Jul 09, 11:23

It's actually "The Netherlands" :-) (Holland being a big part of that, but not all... ;-) And Ps. They are almost playing on home ground, Facto Jul 09, 11:25

K, just for that, I'm rooting for Spain (who has already been picked by the psychic octopus to win) {nm} secretstalker Jul 09, 11:28

I find it sad that an octopuss has had better luck at picking the World Cup than I have been picking movies to long or short. {nm} mrbeankc Jul 09, 11:40

Don't feel so bad... the octopus travelled back in time from the future... that's the only reason people think it's psychic. {nm} secretstalker Jul 09, 11:43

Don't be sad - get busy! Start making boxes for the octopus, covered with pictures of the openers. Then bribe aquarium staff to get access.. {nm} Facto Jul 09, 11:56

That's the best idea I've heard all week! LOL! {nm} mrbeankc Jul 09, 13:18

Thanks - and remember; he's from the future. He knows *everything*! Facto Jul 09, 15:24

He's at it again.. ? Paul, the prognosticating octopus.. ? {nm} Facto Jul 09, 11:54

No no no... Holland is correct too !!! Root for the Orange team please . BAD Facto :o {nm} JMT Jul 09, 11:56

Hah, you just say that 'cause your from the Holland-part of the country... ;-) Nationalist! :) {nm} Facto Jul 09, 11:57

This is a complete tangent from movies (sorry) but what are the other parts of The Netherlands? {nm} secretstalker Jul 09, 11:59

None really... a few hundred years ago a part of belgium was part of it... but not anymore. Really. On to the subject of movies I say ;-) {nm} JMT Jul 09, 12:03

Belgian politics are fascinating. lukesed Jul 09, 12:09

So.. You are definitely a Hollander, then... ;-)) {nm} Facto Jul 09, 12:12

And proudly so.; . Dutch, from Holland, The Netherlands and so on JMT Jul 09, 12:46

Zeeland and Friesland are two of them {nm} RogerMore Jul 09, 12:09

Drenthe, Flevoland, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen, Limburg, North Brabant, Overijssel, Utrecht and Zeeland. Holland is two out of 12 Facto Jul 09, 12:11

However, the Belgians are putting together a cunning plan to annex Zeeland and Limburg, which would... GalacticPothealer Jul 09, 12:20

OMG.. let's hope Holland never does what the Soviet Union and breaks up into millions of smaller countries... secretstalker Jul 09, 12:51

The Netherlands.... Grrrrrrr.......... ;-) {nm} Facto Jul 09, 12:54

"Holland is a name in common usage given to a region in the western part of the Netherlands." Facto Jul 09, 12:01

Nutty Professor {nm} JMT Jul 09, 12:05

And by "a number of people" it means... "Facto" :) {nm} secretstalker Jul 09, 12:05

I hear the tracking is through the roof for [PINK2], but Eclipse should get an easy second place :-) {nm} bennyboy10 Jul 09, 12:57
