As a colleague reminded me, the reason it's so late this year is due to the Winter Olympics
I guess they need to give time for all of the guilds to do their awards and give more time to prepare the production once they know the nominees but I'm not sure why the Oscars couldn't be next weekend. There were times when the Indie Spirits happened the night before the Oscars... those were last weekend.
