Personally I think they will have a better chance in remaking & pumping up Iron Eagle than messeing up with the memories people have of Top Gun.
Did you know that Top Gun was the best & most effective recruiting advertisement for the Air Force they ever had. The years after the movie Air Force aplications increased like 200 % or more, some insane number. Until today it was the best publicity they ever got and it was free. The funny thing about it that although it increase aplication in all areas of Air Force {not everyone can be a pilot} initially most people wanted the pilot training.
in late 80s and great parrt of 90s if you wanted to be a pilot you watched Top Gun, if you wanted to build the airplane you were a fan of Robotech.
