I don't know about you, but I've read lots of stories about the impacts of zero tolerance policies and police being called to schools on
trivial matters. There's more or less unanimous agreement that it goes too far, but it's hard to do anything other than shake your head and say "this school board in this far-off place is idiots". Â (Also, isn't the WaPo coastal media?)
One reason this one is getting more reaction and attention is because it's related to science - so you have everyone who was treated as different in high school for being a nerd on the kid's side. And promoting kids in science is a national issue, so it gets attention from people like the President and NASA in a way that a kid playing with a pop-tart bitten into a gun shape does not. (Obviously that kid shouldn't have been suspended either, but...)
I mean, race is also a big factor. But this story hits home to people on several levels.
