Ok, Here's my warped logic on why I don't believe This is it won't do as well as expected:

Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers (who by the way have very clean images, have never been accused of child molestation, and who are universally quite popular) put out movies at the apex of their popularity and the U.S. ticket buying public pretty much said, "Meh." But now I'm supposed to believe that a movie of Michael Jackson rehearsing is supposed to capture the hearts and dollars of this same fickle and finicky American audience? The same audience who wouldn't buy his records the last 10 or 15 years of his life? The same Americans who had no interest in seeing him perform in his own country for the last decade? The same people who accused him of horrible crimes against children, put him on trial, and even after he was acquitted, assumed he was guilty and treated him as such? The same people that laughed and ridiculed him in life and continue to ridicule him and his family even after he's dead? I'm supposed to believe that these same humans are going to support a Michael Jackson "rehearsal" movie to the tune of 40 plus million dollars this weekend just because the studio hype machine says it's so? Puh-leeeze!

Will the theaters be packed the first couple of days? Absolutely. The die-hard fans and idiots who spent days waiting in line (to buy a ticket to see a movie) will have every seat filled on Tuesday and Wednesday. But then what? Are YOU gonna go see the movie? Your wife? Your girlfriend? Your kids? Your co-workers or boss? Your church members? The guys at the lodge? Your son in college? Your daughter in high school? Tweens? Just who is the demo for this movie? MJ wasn't considered family fare during the last years of his life. Who the hell is going to support this thing through the weekend to the tune of 70 million dollars?

I AM a Michael Jackson fan. I grew up on him. I grew up with him. (Though I'm a WAAAAAY bigger Prince fan and always have been), nobody sings and dances better than Michael Jackson and no one in our lifetime ever will. Having said all that, I have no desire whatsoever to see this movie and haven't come across anyone outside of the crying fanatics who will. Even if I did want to see it, I wouldn't go the first week. Sitting in a theater packed with those crying, dressed up loons singing his songs is the last place I want to spend my weekend. I'd just as soon wait for the DVD (which I'm sure will be out just in time for Christmas.) Then I'll just go to a friends house and watch his bootleg copy for free.

Call me crazy but I just don't think the average Joe or Joan gives a crap about this movie. But I'll be the first to say I was wrong if that turns out to be the case on Sunday afternoon.
