adult and move more into the suburbs (and now in the city) and a job where I finally interacted on a daily basis, you find out there are mostly just like you.  Some are jerks, some are nice. Although I had experience of discrimination as a very short female.  Try buying a new car in the 80's - all the salesman would ignore you.

C: Ghost in the Shell Is Racist in Unexpected Ways (would make an interesting double feature with Get Out) Antibody Mar 31, 08:32

which apparently is one reason WB is chasing Peele for Akira. or they could just cast the roles appropriately {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 31, 09:07

They did. They put a good looking girl in a role she deserves {nm} tteddy286 Mar 31, 12:52

you think we're taking this racism thing too far... durf Mar 31, 09:34

The article had a pretty simple explanation. From my POV the twisting comes from the "this couldn't possibly be racist in any way" argument {nm} RogerMore Mar 31, 09:47

we aren't anywhere remotely in the vicinity of "far" in dealing with white America's racism {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 31, 09:56

There's no "contorting" to see what's plain in sight. A Tokyo where Japanese people is a minority. A Japanese woman LITERALLY Antibody Mar 31, 09:58

why is ok to cast a minority in the role of a traditionally white character, but not ok to cast a white person as a traditionally ethnic adrenalin112 Mar 31, 10:59

name one example of the negative that you're saying exists (white actor taking a traditionally non-white role) {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 31, 11:02

liz banks in power rangers {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 11:03

isnt Ghost in the shell another example? Scarlett playing Major Motoko Kusanagi, I dont know Manga stuff??? {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 11:06

miles teller playing latin vinny pazienza (bleed for this) {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 11:11

these are not on the same level as Barbie or Spiderman, sorry {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 31, 11:15

well we havent switched up barbie or spiderman yet.... so whats your point {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 11:22

They did in the comics. Even did it to Ironman {nm} tteddy286 Mar 31, 12:54

I think you have to look case by case. In this specific case, it's the lead role, and also most of the other roles in the movie. RogerMore Mar 31, 11:10

Because white people have been taking the roles of underrepresented minorities hundred of years, but not vice versa. {nm} Antibody Mar 31, 11:30

so now its time to exact revenge & exclude white people? {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 11:41

No, casting POC to play roles created as POC would just be a start. That's not exclusion. {nm} Antibody Mar 31, 11:47

Casting a POC to play a fictional white character would then be just leveling the acting field. {nm} Antibody Mar 31, 11:51

im upset that british emma watson was cast to play a french belle, i must protest my disgust! {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 12:01

geez you really have it out for white people dmac {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 12:04

I don't how wanting equality and fairness is "having it out for white people". {nm} Antibody Mar 31, 12:09

Because you want to exclude white people from being able to play characters that were traditionally a POC adrenalin112 Mar 31, 12:15

Nope, I never said white people should be excluded and those roles can only be played by POC. {nm} Antibody Mar 31, 12:19

Wanting POC to play roles written for POC is not coming at the expense of white people. {nm} Antibody Mar 31, 12:22

And how is that not? {nm} tteddy286 Mar 31, 12:47

Though again, we still have Peter Parker and white Barbie. They're not excluded. {nm} RogerMore Mar 31, 11:47

Racism would be casting based on race, not on what will generate the most profit... durf Mar 31, 10:17

This post proves my point. {nm} RogerMore Mar 31, 10:28

if anything it proves you're racist {nm} durf Mar 31, 10:32

don't mean to make it a personal attack on you . . . just the fact this is being discussed means those who bring it up are racist. {nm} durf Mar 31, 10:34

they need to look deep inside...they have a lot of hate, sad. {nm} durf Mar 31, 10:35

No, it just proves you should be asking yourself some obvious questions. RogerMore Mar 31, 10:41

Actually had this movie been cast with a more traditional look & its appropriate asian race, it could have been more profitable. {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 11:01

Though there's a twist there as well - would a Hollywood studio be able to make an Asian-themed movie for Asians that is profitable? RogerMore Mar 31, 11:46

Fresh of the boat is seeming to do really well, its one of my favorite sitcoms on tv at the moment. adrenalin112 Mar 31, 12:11

Though TV is something that allows a lot more experimentation and risk-taking. The show's not working quite well? Tweak it. The show doesn't RogerMore Mar 31, 12:38

To answer the question, yes, but it has to be done in baby steps, and building up stars to appropriately represent the culture & appeal to adrenalin112 Mar 31, 12:13

But paraphrasing, that's "yes, but not yet" {nm} RogerMore Mar 31, 12:25

What's disgusting is how much stupid is out there, especially amongst white people. islander Mar 31, 10:35

that white guilt runs deep {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 11:02

No that's not it. {nm} islander Mar 31, 11:06

thats just 1 of many reasons. Another of which is, they just dont understand the perspective of something theyve never experienced {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 11:13

this isn't about people's own personal experiences. this is about persistent discrimination on a systemic level {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 31, 12:38

But people are discriminated for all sorts of reasons - there is persitant against - short, fat, old, female, etc. Just because you haven't JDolphin Mar 31, 14:11

nobody has to feel guilty about remedying past discrimination. just do it and be happy {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 31, 11:50

No one has to remedy anything. Dont blame the current generation for prior generations mistakes. {nm} adrenalin112 Mar 31, 12:17

fixing the past in no way assigns "blame" or "guilt" (except in the mind of white people, apparently). it's just fixing what's been broken {nm} slipping jimmy Mar 31, 12:23

Get em man. Hit them all with the truth. They all seem to have a great disregard for fairness by desiring only POC in roles {nm} tteddy286 Mar 31, 12:50

Dude, hit the nail right on the head. {nm} tteddy286 Mar 31, 12:57

It is absolutely AMAZING that Rollingthunder hasn't said a damn thing about this. {nm} PlayItAgainSam Mar 31, 18:52

Was this movie making a political comment that I missed? Is it a real life story? Maybe it is making a comment about 98.5% Japanese Japan? Catzan Mar 31, 22:13
