A studio like Paramount has about 8-10 releases a year, and of those a handful with $100M+ invested (assuming they haven't spread risk by bringing in outside investment). They're harder to weak and they can't be replaced if they're bad. If one of them doesn't work (like Monster Trucks), it's a big deal, so they minimise risk by picking recognisable properties and stars to make movies they understand.
