We should be careful not to let an enthusiasm for originality mask the fact that storytelling in European culture is often re-telling.
... or at least, an elaboration, extension, or re-purposing of a known story to new ends. The Aeneid, the Oresteia are elaborations of The Iliad and The Odyssey. Few of Shakespeare's plays are "original" stories, if I remember well. The "charges" against "Avatar" for its reliance on the Pocahontas story led to some fine comedy, but don't really touch on the question of whether not it's "original."
There's very funny business along this kind of question in the "creative crisis" scene in Mike Leigh's "Topsy-Turvy," a scene in which Sullivan longs for an original topic, and Gilbert continues to offer generic ones.
