Warlock, you're mistake about the function of the kick...
.. the kick in an upper level brings you out of the dream of a lower/deeper level, not in the level where the kick commences. The van hitting the water brings everyone out of the snow level, not out of the van level. To leave the van level you'd need to initate a kick in reality (i.e. the plane). So the crew can swim out of the van and function in the van level because they haven't had a kick from reality. Does that make sense?
