The way I understand it as well **spoilers***
The "kicks" had to come in sequence...if I remember, they had gone into "3" levels of dreams...so in order to be woke up in the van, they would need to have been "kicked" in level 3 first, woke up there, then been "kicked" in level 2, to wake up there, and then have the "kick" in level 1 (like the feeling of falling in the van) in order to wake up there, and which then would allow them to wake up in the plane after the sedatives wore off...
I think that's why they said, if they were NOT kicked in the lower levels, you would stay in a state of "dreamlessness" forever??
At least, that's the way it seemed to me in the movie...
