Inception - question (SPOILERS)

I have a question about the whole "kick" thing that wakes them up.

They establish that they need that feeling of falling to help them wake up from the sedatives in the dream world. How come, when the van is falling off the bridge at the end, they don't wake up immediately following it hitting the water? They swim to shore and sit for a bit. Is that an inconsistency?
