Because Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Of Human Bondage, The Iron Giant, Frankenstein and countless other book-to-films all sucked, right?

Sure, Uncharted might have been a better than average video game, storywise. But as it was basically just a riff on Indiana Jones, I don't see why you couldn't just make an adventure film that sticks with the spirit of the game (i.e. an Indy knockoff) while exploring new territory.

Films require an internal conflict and an external conflict. I would maintain that since video games are entirely based on physical actions, it is ostensibly impossible to build in an internal conflict for the characters. As such, the basic structure is incompatible with the needs of a film.

I'd prefer to see a cool action adventure film that is possibly loosely connected to Uncharted (since Hollywood doesn't make original properties anymore) than to see an actual adaptation of the game. Because, let's face, when Super Mario Brothers, Silent Hill, and Resident Evil 3 are some of the "best" films in your genre...you've got a serious problem.

V: David O. Russell leaves 'Uncharted: Drake's Fortune' medusa May 26, 13:01

I think that's good news for fans! {nm} Antibody May 26, 13:14

His fans or the game's fans? Because this would have been the first time a real auteur took a shot at a video game film. tawdryhepburn May 26, 13:19

An auteur who sounded like he had never even played the game before. {nm} CS May 26, 13:20

Game's fans. His ideas had nothing to do with the actual game. {nm} Antibody May 26, 13:22

And this is a problem because...? tawdryhepburn May 26, 15:33

Because if you bastardize the film beyond reconition, you will lose the built in fanbase. {nm} Antibody May 26, 15:37

Because Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Of Human Bondage, The Iron Giant, Frankenstein and countless other book-to-films all sucked, right? tawdryhepburn May 26, 17:04

Yes, there are probably many book adaptations that sucked as that succeeded, so what. {nm} Antibody May 26, 17:24

Those were all book adaptations that were NOTHING like the novel. Hell, Of Human Bondage is litterally just one chapter of the book. tawdryhepburn May 26, 17:31

Was there a fanbase for that? The videogame movies that've suceeded are those that its fans considered respectful Antibody May 26, 17:53

Resident Evil is NOTHING like the games. And I didn't say that SMB was good. I said it was one of the best video game adaptations. tawdryhepburn May 26, 18:49

But the Uncharted games are more cinematically inclined than most games, whose popularlity stemmed in large part from characters and story. Paul2k May 26, 15:38

No one has EVER bought a video game for the story. It can be a bonus, but it is NEVER the deciding factor. tawdryhepburn May 26, 17:07

*correction* A video game has never been SUCCESSFUL because of the story. They live and die by gameplay. {nm} tawdryhepburn May 26, 17:08

I agree, gameply absolutely trumps story/character in determining a successful (critical and commercial) game. But, story/character can aid Paul2k May 26, 17:19

Eh, fair enough. But Uncharted could never turn a profit by appealing to the game's fans. tawdryhepburn May 26, 17:30

I wonder if Mark Wahlberg will also leave the project. Alot of fans wanted to see Nathan Fillion. {nm} Nightfury82 May 26, 13:33
