If there is a group, no matter how mainstream or fringe, they shouldn't be excluded from film. IMHO, regardless of whether or not I agree with someone's choices, lifestyle, beliefs, morality, etc... everyone deserves to be represented in some way, as a reflection of the society in which we live. It's a good thing to see parts of oneself in movies we watch. Relating to characters and stories lends to a greater sense of self, belonging, and helps us feel like we fit in somewhere... no matter how big or small the space within which we live; even if it's in the margins.
I don't have to agree with a person's perspective to understand they have a right to be whomever they are. Successful films that I personally have no interest in and will likely never see are clear demonstrations that they appealed to somebody, and therefore have value to us all.
