Tilda Swinton began acting at Cambridge University where she obtained a degree in social and polical sciences. Early in her career, she worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company and in films by the late director Derek Jarman. Her breakthrough role came in 1993's Orlando as the trans-gender title character. More recently, Swinton has alternated between Hollywood films such as The Beach with independent fares like The Deep End.
