at $3 how much more are you making? I assume they have the distributors in on this, so they arent paying full film rental
so you're making $1.41 per ticket? for crappy product? F&B on top is great for sure but you'll have to sell a TON of popcorn to just hit your overhead. Can't see how its worth it. If you just want to get butts in seats, I'll maintain the best way to do that is to have good product
And if you don't have the distributors on board (which is possible, AMC pays full film rental for their A-list sales)
As to its not the theaters fault the product is crappy, thats only partially true. Theaters are pretty empty during the week, so its not like this is a new problem. If theaters become fully dependent on studio content they are dead. They'll need to learn at some point, how to make non studio product (and alternative content) work.
DL: Angelika has reversed their stance, will participate in National Cinema Day. Landmark still not. Aug 29, 17:19
should have done it on Labor Day at least to get butts in seats on a holiday that doesn't usually do huge numbers {nm} Aug 29, 17:42
It's more about the media coverage/spin/buzz "did you hear movie theatres sold out shows from opening to close Saturday?" Aug 29, 18:12
