Sean Penn proven that his work in 1981's Fast Times at Ridgemont High was just the beginning of a brilliant career. Penn made a concerted effort to distance himself from the teen genre altogether, selecting follow-up roles in such films as Bad Boys and The Falcon and the Snowman. With a penchant for gritty roles, Penn's work began to earn critical acclaim in the 1990s. A favorite of the festival circuit, Penn has earned best actor honors from Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. In 1995, Penn scored an Oscar nomination for his leading role in Dead Man Walking. Penn followed with wonderful performances in Sweet and Lowdown and I Am Sam, both of which earned him well-deserved Oscar nominations for Best Actor. Penn has played the part of director in The Indian Runner and The Crossing Guard.
