"The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air" would make very worthy winners (and therefore probably won't win).

"Precious" and "An Education" were very solid, and absorbing; like "The Hurt Locker" and "Up in the Air," completely realized, rich worlds.

"District 9" and "A serious man" were terrific, too, and refreshingly unpredictable.

For me, "Up" was the most disappointing film in the group by far, a dreadful let down for the company of "The Incredibles," "Ratatouille" and "Finding Nemo." Even "Cars" makes "Up" look bad, for its cartoon sidekicks and its cartoon villain. Perhaps that's it: the great Pixar films don't have cartoon characters. "Up" does.

That leaves "Avatar": spectacular and uninteresting, with a dreadful score.

I missed "Inglourious Basterds" on account of TROL.
