Let me start with my complete agreement re: the son. Lazy and potentially a show-killer for me.
I found your views on the purposeful binge-manipulation to be completely accurate. But here's the thing, for me at least; I view television in two ways concerning this aspect. On one side you have shows that have their own episode storyline with perhaps an overarcing sotryline in the background in one category. I see why you put OITNB in there but that is a show that I find dirivitive and not my bag so here are a few examples that I would give...At the top of the mountain would be The Shield which did this with mastery, Lost in the first couple seasons was also excellent in this regard. To some degree The Sopranos also excelled here.
Then I look at the other side which is what I think of as a big long movie. This is where I place Bloodline, House of Cards, and many BBC shows like Luther or State of Play. Now with these shows I don't look at them as single episodes, I look at them as long stories (which, as you pointed out, can linger) but also, more importantly, I look at them as showcases for the talent. When I really like a show as I did with Bloodline, I simply don't care how long it lingers, I am just so into watching the actors and actresses eat up their scenes. Ben Mendelsohn in Bloodlines, Idris Elba in Luther (and also, The Wire), Robin Wright in HoC, and both guys in season 1 of True Detective are great examples. I don't want to see the possibly meandering season end because I am so into the complete dedication these folks have to becoming their characters.
So, I get what you are saying. But for me personally, I absolutely LOVE both types of storytelling.
As a completely seperate sidenote, and one that I suspect you are very familiar with; It may not actually be a knock that Netflix is targeting the bingewatching crowd. This is a niche that is not well represented on network TV often and only sometimes on cable. They are intentionally looking to draw in a certain type of viewer. Not unlike some of the great flicks that you guys put out. I am grateful for all the options and we all make our own decisions.
Even more of a sidenote; I just nominated Cheap Thrills for a movie and band night thing we have going down here in Tampa down in Ybor. I'm not sure what hoops the guys need to jump through to show it at a club but if you folks get a request, please say yes! I love that flick and it is criminally unseen.
